We strive for an engaged workforce and workplace where each attorney is highly skilled, equipped, productive, and satisfied with their career. Our strong coaching and mentoring program is a cornerstone at Stoel Rives, built upon the core principles of cooperation, enthusiasm, and commitment. With this focus, we develop successful attorneys and teams, which translates into success for our clients.
Prior to arrival, new and lateral associates, of counsel attorneys, and staff attorneys are typically assigned both a partner coach and an associate or of counsel mentor, both of whom are usually drawn from the new attorney’s practice group. Partner coaches advise on long-range career planning, skill development, workflow management, and fostering strong working relationships with peers and supervisors. Mentors are typically mid- to senior-level associates or of counsel attorneys who provide support for new attorneys to become productive contributors and successfully integrate into the Stoel Rives culture. We encourage coaches and mentors to meet with our new attorneys at least monthly.
The firm has a firm-wide Coaching and Mentoring Committee and office-based Coaching and Mentoring Committees that monitor and evaluate the overall program for effectiveness. These Committees oversee the process of assigning coaches and mentors as well as monitor coach and mentor relationships on an ongoing basis to ensure they are successful and meeting the new attorney’s professional and practice development goals. On an annual basis, we honor individuals with Coach of the Year and Mentor of the Year awards to highlight and recognize those who have made significant contributions to the coaching and mentoring program.
