Data Privacy and Security attorney Hunter Ferguson is quoted in Bloomberg Law in an article titled “Washington State Enacts New Data Breach Notice Requirements,” published May 7, 2019. The article discusses a bill signed into law recently in Washington that amends the state’s data breach notification law to reduce from 45 days to 30 days the time frame after a breach in which a company must notify the state attorney general and affected individuals.

The bill also expands the types of personal information for which a company must notify individuals if it is breached. Ferguson, chair of Stoel Rives’ global Privacy and Data Security practice, said that businesses covered under the law will have to “look at their database configuration to make sure they’re treating these categories of information with the appropriate safeguards.”
