Stoel Rives’ Agribusiness Group Co-Leader Kirk Maag Receives 2024 Alumni Fellow Recognition from Oregon State University Alumni Association

Press Release

PORTLAND, Ore.—Stoel Rives, and Am Law 200 firm, is proud to announce that partner Kirk Maag, co-leader of the firm’s Agribusiness industry group, has been selected as a 2024 Alumni Fellow by the Oregon State University Alumni Association. Maag will be recognized along with sixteen of his alumni peers at the Black and Orange Awards Celebration in Corvallis, Oregon, on September 19 and 20th.

“I am deeply grateful to be recognized by my alma mater,” said Maag. “I was inspired to pursue a career in environmental and natural resources law while at OSU in classes taught by Dr. Fred Obermiller, who became a mentor and friend. Today, I consider it my responsibility to invest in the next generation of natural resource industry leaders and pay forward the investments that so many made in me.”

Maag was nominated by the College of Agricultural Sciences for his commitment to cultivating community in the next generation of agribusiness and forest products industry leaders. He is deeply invested in the agricultural industry in the Pacific Northwest, having grown up working on his family’s farm and feedlot in eastern Oregon, where he discovered his passion for agriculture and natural resources.

“We’re honored to celebrate Kirk and the meaningful contributions he continues to make to our community each year. His willingness to share his rich insights and advice with our students inspires them with confidence in taking those first steps after they leave our program,” said Staci Simonich, Oregon State University's Dean of Agricultural Sciences and Director of the Oregon Agricultural Experiment Station. “He is a shining example of a leader and mentor, and we are lucky to have him as a resource in our alumni network.”

Currently an environmental and natural resources partner at Stoel Rives in Portland, Maag has served on boards and committees for the Oregon Water Resources Congress and the Oregon State Bar. Over the years he has held numerous leadership positions with organizations focused on enriching the lives of young agriculture students. He currently serves on the boards of directors and is a past board chair for the Oregon Future Farmers of America Foundation and Cultivating Change Foundation—a nonprofit with a mission to value and elevate LGBTQ+ agriculturists.

“We prize Kirk not just for his well-regarded legal skills as a natural resources attorney, but for his tireless interest in pouring his energy back into the Oregon agriculture community and organizations that inspired him to start his career,” said David E. Filippi, leader of Stoel Rives’ Environment, Land Use & Natural Resources practice group. “He is as talented a mentor as he is a legal practitioner, and I am proud to call him my partner.”

Maag graduated summa cum laude from the Oregon State University in 2006 with a B.S. in Environmental Economics, Policy and Management. He then earned his J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center, graduating magna cum laude.

“Kirk’s passion for building up young leaders in Oregon agriculture is clear to all who have had the pleasure of working with him. His lifelong dedication to the Oregon agribusiness community, including through his upbringing on an Eastern Oregon feedlot, his dedicated involvement with the Oregon FFA Foundation, and other organizations, have equipped him to help shape the next generation of industry leaders,” said Adam Dittman, co-leader of Stoel Rives’ Agribusiness industry group.

The Oregon State University Alumni Association established the Alumni Fellows recognition program in 1988 in order to recognize eminent alumni that distinguish themselves in their professions and communities. Individuals are nominated by their graduating college, campus unit or department at the university. Join us as we celebrate Kirk at the Black and Orange Awards Celebration on Sept. 19.
