SF Chronicle/SFGATE Quotes Mike Mills on Effect of New CA Methane Regs on Smaller Petroleum Companies
Attorney Mike Mills, chair of Stoel Rives’ Oil & Gas, Pipelines and Mining Industries team, was quoted in the SF Chronicle/SFGATE in an article titled “California passes nation’s toughest methane emission regulations.” The article discusses the recent passage in California of rules meant to reduce by up to 45 percent over the next nine years methane emissions at oil and gas production plants.
The passage of the rules, widely considered to be the most rigorous and comprehensive of their type in the U.S., was hailed as a triumph by environmentalists but criticized as unnecessary by oil and gas producers—not the top emitters of methane in California according to the CEO of trade group the California Independent Petroleum Association.
Mills cautioned that complying with the new rules will impose costs on smaller petroleum companies that will be “particularly painful.”
