Life at Stoel: Civic Engagement

Scott Rosenthal
Partner, Real Estate

My name is Scott Rosenthal. I'm a partner here in our Portland office in our real estate transactions practice. And I focus mostly on real estate development.

How does Stoel Rives shape communities?

I'm a real estate lawyer. I care a lot about the communities where our clients are building projects. And Stoel Rives has an over 100-year history of being very engaged civically in our community and helping guide the growth of our communities, helping advise our political leaders, our civic leaders, the leaders in our arts organizations, other cultural organizations. I'm a much happier lawyer working at a firm such as Stoel Rives which expects its lawyers to be involved in the community and also supports that involvement directly.

What happens when lawyers go beyond the office?

Yeah, I'm a much happier lawyer working at a firm like Stoel Rives which provides support for the work that I want to do in my community and the work that our clients expect we're doing in our communities.

Can real estate development change lives?

The best day I have is when we get to go to a groundbreaking on a project we've worked on and there are shovels going in the ground and there are speeches and then you just see the excitement. You feel the excitement of the community for the project, whether it's a housing project, in some cases it's a development that's going to support jobs, whether it's office or retail or an industrial site. As a real estate lawyer, that's really the best feeling; the fact that I can drive around or I can walk around and I can point to projects that I've helped our clients build.
