PORTLAND- Stoel Rives partner Barnes H. Ellis was honored with the Judge Learned Hand Award for Lifetime Achievement by the Oregon American Jewish Committee on November 15, 2007.

Ellis, whose career with Stoel Rives LLP has spanned more than 40 years, was on the committee that established the Metropolitan Public Defender Services Inc. (MPD). In 1971, MPD began providing indigent defense in Multnomah County, and service was expanded to Washington County in 1973. Ellis then served as chair of MPD's board of trustees for more than 30 years. He has been chair of the Oregon Public Defense Services Commission, which oversees the funding of indigent defense services statewide since its creation in 2001.

"Barnes Ellis is an exceptional lawyer and citizen," said Stoel Rives firm managing partner Bob Van Brocklin. "His work to establish and lead the Metropolitan Public Defender Services organization and as chair of the Public Services Defense Commission are but two examples of his many contributions to our community. His colleagues at Stoel Rives congratulate Barnes on this well-deserved recognition by the American Jewish Committee."

Ellis, who graduated with honors from Harvard Law School, has been named in the Best Lawyers in America list every year since 1989. This year, for the second consecutive year, he was named in the Top 10 Oregon Super Lawyers® list.
