Cellulosic Biomass - Challenges and Opportunities
9/14/2010
Summary:
Alan Van Omer of Prairie Business Magazine provided an overview of remarks made during the Biomass 2010 Renewable Power, Fuels and Chemicals Workshop. Van Omer referenced comments made by Stoel Rives attorney Joe Thompson regarding specific challenges and opportunities confronting cellulosic biomass ventures in the United States. Thompson noted that cellulose-based ethanol ventures present significant differences to corn-based ethanol business models in financing, intellectual property and licensing of technology and feedstock procurement and storage. He predicted that financing will available, but that a large portion of financing will come from accredited and strategic investors. As for the intellectual property and licensing of technology, Thompson proposed that investors are interested in owning the intellectual property.
