$100 Billion Slated for Green Energy Initiatives
2/4/2009

Stoel Rives member Greg Jenner commented in CNNMoney.com and Renewable Energy World Magazine on the more than $100 billion in 'green energy' initiatives contained in the nearly $900 billion stimulus package currently being debated in the U.S. Senate. As it stands, the initiatives use tax cuts and government spending for a wide range of projects, including large scale wind farms, renewable energy loans, and conservation programs.

Jenner, a former Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Tax Policy from 2002 through 2004, called the measures "a good first step." Jenner has been actively involved in parsing some of the language in both the Senate and U.S. Congressional versions of the stimulus bill. He predicted however that the bill is unlikely to pass in its current form. "Action on the Senate floor so far indicates that there might not be enough votes in the Senate to pass the bill. As a result, negotiations are likely occurring behind the scenes to determine how the bill can be modified to gain the necessary votes."
