In Memoriam – Jim Kearney, Stoel Rives Partner (1968-2023)

With great sadness, we announce the unexpected passing of our longtime colleague and partner, Jim Kearney on November 27, 2023. Jim was a remarkable attorney, an indispensable member of our firm, and someone who wielded his wit with a grace and comedy that made even our most harried litigators laugh out loud at our collective humanity. His irrepressible humor brightened our days and will be missed in countless ways.

A member of our Corporate practice group, Jim built a thriving M&A, public company and SEC reporting practice. His published business writing reflected his distinctive humorous voice, backed by an impressive grasp of securities laws and arcane rules, regulations, and SEC reporting obligations. Jim joined Stoel Rives in 1998 from the University of Washington School of Law, following a year as a consultant for privatization in transition economies and two years as an analyst for the U.S. Senate Budget Committee.

Jim’s humor, kindness, and thoughtfulness will be long remembered and deeply missed. Our hearts go out to his family during this incredibly challenging time.
